Mouthwashing Character Introductions

MouthWashing Game

Curly

Captain

Curly, the seasoned captain of the Tulpar, finds himself in a tragic position after the crash. Once a respected leader, he's now severely injured, unable to speak or move, and entirely dependent on his crew. Despite his incapacitation, Curly plays a pivotal role in the story. His actions before the crash and his silent presence afterward drive much of the narrative tension. Players will uncover Curly's past decisions, his relationships with the crew, and the weight of responsibility he carried as captain.

Jimmy

Co-pilot

Jimmy, the former co-pilot who assumes leadership after the crash, is a complex and controversial figure. Ambitious and at times ruthless, Jimmy's actions throughout the mouthwashing game will keep players questioning his motives. As the story unfolds, his past and the events leading up to the crash reveal a man grappling with personal demons and the pressure of impending fatherhood. Jimmy's character arc is central to the game's exploration of morality and redemption.

Anya

Medical Officer

Anya, the ship's medic, carries perhaps the heaviest secret among the crew. Skilled and compassionate, she finds herself in an impossible situation after the crash. Her pregnancy, revealed through flashbacks, adds a layer of complexity to the interpersonal dynamics aboard the Tulpar. Anya's choices and actions, especially concerning Curly's care and her relationship with Jimmy, are crucial to the unfolding drama.

Swansea

Mechanic

Swansea, the ship's mechanic, represents the practical, problem-solving element of the crew. Tasked with keeping the damaged Tulpar functional, Swansea's technical skills are as vital as his ability to navigate the increasingly tense social dynamics. His protective attitude towards Daisuke adds depth to his character, revealing a nurturing side amidst the crisis. Swansea's perspective often provides a grounding counterpoint to the escalating conflicts around him.

Daisuke

Intern

Daisuke, the last-minute intern addition to the crew, embodies the innocence lost in the face of catastrophe. His inexperience and vulnerability make him a sympathetic character, often caught in the middle of the others' conflicts. Daisuke's journey throughout the mouthwashing game is one of harsh awakening, as he's forced to confront the brutal realities of survival in space. His fate becomes a focal point for the moral quandaries faced by the other characters.

Mouthwashing Reviews and Reception

Mouthwashing is one of the best indie games I've ever played and easily one of the greatest stories I've had the pleasure of experiencing. Even after watching one of my favorite streamers play it in one sitting, I just had to pick it up and play it for myself. From it's dark and difficult story beats to its 70's futurist aesthetic and realistically written characters, this game is borderline perfect from beginning to end.

Probably my favourite indie release of the year. It took me about 2.3 hours to complete, but there are def sequences at the end that weren't really that necessary to have been included in the final cut. The characterisation of the entire crew and the narrative being fully realised in the jumps between past and present are done really really well, and the final twist really pieces it all together. One of the more sensitive plot points is also never said out loud but rather something the player discovers via context cues in the language the characters use, a sadly realistic approach.

I bought this mouthwashing expecting a wacky cosmic horror with people turning into monsters after drinking mouthwash. What I got was a character drama exploring the horror of human depravity and narcissism. Because you don't need cosmic horror mouthwash to have a person become a monster. This mouthwashing game has stuck with me, my thoughts keep wandering back to it, and any game that does that is worth recommending.

The Mouthwashing Game is disgusting, distressing, and infuriating in all the right ways. This is the proper traditional usage of science fiction writing, using the bleak backdrop like a stage to tell a story that could've worked regardless of the setting. In fact, this feels like a more graphic version of a Star Trek: TNG episode, albeit perhaps a few of them combined given the writing and concepts here. Avoiding spoilers, this is more Kubrickian psychological horror that is closer to "The Shining" than Paul W.S. Anderson's "Event Horizon" that most people might expect; Mouthwashing is more stressful than it is scary, so even non-horror fans should be able to handle this (just don't eat while playing).
